We’ve Been Singing It for 150 Years

Yes, Jesus loves me.
Yes, Jesus loves me.
Yes, Jesus loves me.
The Bible tells me so.

We’ve been singing that song for 150 years now. It’s probably one of the first songs a young child reared in a Christian environment learns. When Buddy and I were pastors, it’s the first song that we had our nursery workers sing to the babies. We wanted those little babies to hear and experience the love of Jesus.

It is such a simple song, but it is a profound truth. It is the very basis of Christianity and the reason we can come to our heavenly Father without fear and trembling.

Yes, it is a simple truth that we sing and preach, but do we really understand the full meaning of it? Not that we will ever fully comprehend God’s amazing love until we see Him face-to-face, but are we walking in what we know of His great love?

God’s love is powerful, practical and personal. If our love relationship with Him is not in order, if spending time with Him and His Word is not our first priority, then nothing else in our lives will be in order. If our relationship with Him is out of order, our lives are out of order. We sin because we don’t understand the power of His love and allow His love to work in us.

If you have a hard time obeying God, you have a love problem. Jesus told the disciples, “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments” (John 14:15). Obedience proves love. If you want to obey God, then focus on His love. Deepen your relationship with Him. Then you won’t have a hard time obeying the Lover of your soul.

If you have a problem with fear, you have a love problem. First John 4:18 (NIV) says, “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.” What is there to be afraid of when you know that your heavenly Father is for you, He’s watching out for you, and He’s going to take care of you every minute of every day? He’s never going to leave you or forget about you.

At the beginning of this year, the Lord spoke a prophetic word of promised completion, a year of fulfillment and manifestations of victory again and again for those who refused to give in. I know He will do what He has promised. How can I be so sure that He will do what He has said? Because He loves me. It’s that simple.
